– Shanghai’s strive to become the International Shipping Centre
– Shanghai’s cutting edge
– Connecting Business in Shanghai, 2010

On January 26th, a special blessing activity was held in XiaHai Temple. It attracted many shipping companies to attend. They come to bless for a smooth recovery in shipping industry and hope that the Shanghai’s two centre building (international shipping centre and financial centre) could complete at an early date.

Shanghai’s strive to become the International Shipping Centre

It was couple of years ago when Shanghai wished to build itself into a shipping centre. At that time, everything was ready except for a deep-water port. The Waigaoqiao Port Area, with 12 meters water depth, can only accept ships carrying no more than 4,000 containers. Those ships carrying a large number of goods can only flow to neighboring Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Busan, Kobe and other port for transit. There was no deep-water port along Shanghai’s coastline. Fortunately, Yangshan area, located in Hangzhou Bay, 32 km from Shanghai Nanhui Luchaog port, comes to the minds of leaders in Shanghai. The water depth in Yanshan area is of about 15 meters. So it could accept a 6,000 standard containers ship. Given that the magnificent East China Sea Bridge would be completed in two years, Shanghai people was doomed to turn the natural moat into a thoroughfare.

After restructuring, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co.Ltd (SIPG) has spent every effort in promoting the "Yangtze River strategy". It is this strategy that help Shanghai to gain a solid position in Yangtze River modes of transport. Remarkable progress was made in 2005. In the Year 2005, SIPG has joined hands with Wuhan, Nanjing and Chongqing, the three main port city in China. On December 9, 2005, Yangshan Deepwater Port started to open and embrace the Greek Ship ——  " Antwerp" to come. By the year 2006, Shanghai has invested nearly 20 projects in the Yangtze River area, achieving a total investment of more than 1 billion yuan. And by the year 2007, the Yangtze River transport, accounting for half of the total national economy, has already contributed 95% foreign trade containers and 60% domestic trade containers to Shanghai Port. In the second half year of 2007, the Yangtze River strategy continues to expand into the Jiujiang area. SIPG controlled at least 70% of the shareholding of Jiujiang port. SIPG deeply believe that Jiujiang, as the golden waterway and port forJiangxi Province is sure to be established into a logistics hub along the Yangtze River waterway and Beijing-Jiujiang railway.

It is said that China's 6800 kilometers of coastline is just like a fully stretched bow. And the1600-km Yangtze River is like an arrow ready to be launched on this bow. Shanghai definitely is the head of this sharp arrow, which stands at the prime location along the Yangtze River and connect to the whole world.

Undergoing the world financial crisis, it forces the shipping industry to have a re-thinking about its future strategy. Will the ultra-deep-water port development and manufacturing of large vessels lead the future shipping market trends? This is very crucial. The Yangshan Port holds a depth of 15 meters, while the current new born Panama sixth-generation ships demands up to 20 meters water depth. This is so "sad” for Yangshan, isn’t it?

At the end of 2008, the Shanghai Yangshan Port finished its third phase, which means the main Yangshan Port project completed. The annual design capacity reaches to 5 million standard containers. Such a high investment and maintenance costs forces us to think about the future revenue space.

Shanghai’s cutting edge

However, all the defects are expected to be made up through the matching rules in establishing shipping centre. The linkage strengths owned by Shanghai as a financial center and a shipping center is not comparable for other cities.

Chang zhenhong, the Secretary-General of Shanghai International Shipping Center, said, "Considering the actual carrying capacity of the port and environmental capacity, the quantity of goods will no longer be pursued as the primary objective for Shanghai in the future. Instead, Shanghai will focus more on shipping services improving and upgrading. With a solid economic foundation, Shanghai’s next to do is to complete the comprehensive shipping financial services, thus improving the international transit capacity. So Shanghai has matched on a "compound" road of building an international shipping center. And that is Shanghai’s cutting edge comparing to Tianjin and Dalian.” As for an international shipping center, outstanding performance is required in many aspects such as shipbuilding, wharf construction, dredging, ship leasing, crew management, shipping finance, insurance, consulting and legal services.

Connecting Business in Shanghai, 2010

The year 2010 coincides with the 20th anniversary of Pudong's development. After including Nanhui as a part of Pudong New area, it is more and more clear that Pudong in Shanghai will take a leading role in Shangahi’s two-centre building task. The existing port and bonded area resources are all concentrated in the new Pudong. So it is irreplaceable that Pudong will shoulder more responsibilities in establishing shipping centre based on it natural resources and unique advantages. transport logistic China 2010 coinciding with the time, will be open from June 8 to 10 in Shanghai New International Expo Center. With the aim and mission to provide strong support for Shanghai in terms of logistics development, transport logistic China will take the lead in China logistic market and bring you to a magnificent event of logistics supply chain industry.

2. The strong recovery in shipping industry requires enterprises to enhance their ability to provide multi-service such as multimodal transport, warehousing, logistics and processing. All these leading companies will be presented in transport logistic China.

3. Due to financial crisis, shipping-financing giants in Europe and the United States are undergoing a tough time. Shipping market has experienced nearly a year of deep-rate notes, which provides a good opportunity for the Chinese banks to improve their international ship finance service. CDB and ICBC has made breakthrough during this time in terms of ship financing. Ship leasing will become the new highlights of transport logistic China.

4. With the headquarters, R & D centre and assembly base of aircraft all settled down in Pudong in one year's time, dreams come true that Chinese people could make aircraft by their own. It is sure that Air Cargo China will present you the whole picture of air craft industry.
